AR Sound Words
The AR sound is a vocalic (R-colored) vowel: a vowel and the R sound blended together in one syllable, as in 'car' (car, star, farm).
Age of acquisition. Vocalic R sounds develop alongside R, often between ages 5 and 7. They can lag behind other sounds. Norms vary between children and between sources, so treat this as a rough guide, not a deadline. If you have concerns, an SLP can assess.
How to make it. Shape the vowel first, then let the tongue bunch or curl into the R without a break, so car stays one smooth syllable.
How to practice the AR sound at home
- Start at the word level, then move to short phrases and sentences once the AR sound is easy on its own.
- Practice in short, frequent bursts. Five focused minutes a day beats one long weekly session.
- Model it first: say the word slowly, stretch the AR sound so your child can hear it, then have them copy you.
- Use the picture cards to keep it playful, and praise good tries, not just perfect ones.
